The Vavuniya branch of Sri Lanka Red Cross Society having acknowledged the importance of continuation of awareness activities on dengue control conducted a two week program with the support of 200 Red Cross volunteers. The areas covered are Vavuniya MoH division, Cheddikulam and IDP Zones (Zone 01 to Zone 07). A one day Dengue Prevention and Control mechanism training was conducted by the Ministry of Health (Dengue Control unit) for 100 SLRCS volunteers at the branch hall prior to launching this awareness programme. |
The programme stresses some of the most-important aspects such as keeping the environment free of discarded small containers including yoghurt cups, coconut shells, polystyrene containers, pieces of polythene etc, proper garbage collection and disposal, and the need for fogging in dengue-affected areas for effective dengue control. |

The community has to play a major role in preventing the spreading of dengue epidemic not only during an epidemic but at all times. Awareness activities are important as most of house occupants do not pay sufficient attention towards the eliminating breading sources of mosquitoes such as water containers arranged for flower decorations, preventing ants from sweets, un-cleaned gutters among other places.
