Making connections through "Restoring Family links"

Sri Lanka Red Cross Society has become a reliable source of information for many Sri Lankans who seek information about their relations who have lost links with them after migration.

SLRCS Tracing Service has been operating a Restoring Family Link (RFL) service in order to help the such families whose members separated by migration, disasters and conflict thus alleviating suffering of such families. RFL means locating family members separated by conflict, disaster or migration and restoring contacts between separated family members when normal means of communication such as telephone and postal services are not functioning.

SLRCS Tracing Service works in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross and the network of more than 186 Red Cross and Red Crescent national societies throughout the world that make up the Red Cross Movement enables them to respond to local needs for restoring family links both in Sri Lanka and abroad as part of the Movement.

SLRCS Tracing Service acknowledging the importance of educating the people who leave for foreign employment regarding Restoring Family Link service has begun an awareness programme for them in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment ( SLBFE). The pilot programme was launched recently for a group of men and women who expect to secure employment abroad at Kurunegala Training Center of SLBFE. During the training programme SLRCS explained the nature and value of the service, how and when they can obtain it and other related facts. It was conducted in Sinhala and Tamil with support of SLRCS Kurunegala branch and its Volunteers.

SLRCS will expand this awareness activity to other districts where volunteers from branches have been trained in providing "Restoring family links" services.
