UPDATE #25

25th June 2021 – Today the SLRCS handed over 10-litre oxygen concentrators to the Piliyandala Divisional Hospital and the Wethara District Hospital, which will be used to help in the recovery of #COVID19 patients admitted there. The stocks were handed over by the SLRCS President Jagath Abeysinghe and the Sri Lanka Red Cross – Colombo Branch Executive Officer, Mrs Kumari Kotalawala, to the Medical Officer in Charge and the District Medical Officer of the respective hospitals. The support of the Singapore Red Cross is highly appreciated in the nation’s fight against COVID-19.

25th June 2021 – Our Batticaloa branch recently conducted a blood donation campaign at the Blood Bank Batticaloa in order to support health authorities during these trying times.

24th June 2021 – Today the SLRCS President, Mr Jagath Abeysinghe handed over oxygen concentrators to the Gangodagama hospital in Hakmana, Matara. Participating in this event were the hospital’s Director, Dr. Chinthake Sri Ganagodage, Secretary to the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Mr Gamini Senarath, Divisional Secretary, Mr D.S. Ranhith, and the Deputy Director General of the SLRCS, Mr Aruna Lekamge.

23rd June 2021 – Upon the request of the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Honorable Mahinda Rajapaksa to the Honorary President of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS), Mr Jagath Abeysinghe the latter requested the SLRCS’s sister national societies to support Sri Lanka’s fight against #COVID19. In turn, and as an initial step, the Singapore Red Cross Society donated medical equipment comprising 100 10-litre oxygen concentrators to the Government of Sri Lanka – GoSL. The first consignment was handed over to His Excellency the Prime Minister at Temple Trees yesterday afternoon.

22nd June 2021 – Our Vavuniya branch volunteers continue to support hospital staff in every way they can. And our Kandy branch volunteers have also started supporting the country’s largest #COVID19 intermediate treatment centre at the Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery in Kundasale, where many patients are receiving treatment.

18th June 2021 – In consideration of the adverse economic toll the #COVID19 epidemic has taken on many livelihoods, our Batticaloa branch, in partnership with the Alam Viluthugal organization, distributed dry ration packs to 203 needy families in 5 villages across the district.

17th June 2021 – Our Puttalam branch continues to inform the public to practice #COVID19 prevention measures via public announcements:

16th June 2021 – On request of the National Hospital Management, our Colombo branch volunteers have been deployed to assist hospital staff with administration services in these unprecedented times.

14th June 2021 – Our Mullaitivu, Matale and Gampaha branches continue to disinfect public places and government offices to reduce the risk of #COVID19 transmission.

11th June 2021 – Volunteers from our Ampara Branch assisted the medical staff from the MOH Office Ampara to conduct the #COVID19 #vaccination programme yesterday held at Ampara Town Hall and Am/Hegoda Sri Indrasara School premises.

9th June 2021 – Volunteers from our Badulla and Jaffna branches persist in their mission of informing the public to continue to take precautionary measures against the increasingly virulent #COVID19 epidemic.

8th June 2021 – Blood donation programmes are being continuously carried out by our dedicated volunteers and staff to support medical professionals in the fight against #COVID19 . Pictured here are our Jaffna and Galle branches in action.

7th June 2021 – Volunteers from our Kandy branch continue to provide administrative support to medical staff at the Kandy National hospital in aid of the ongoing #COVID19 response.

4th June 2021 – With the aim of supporting our healthcare heroes, our Polonnaruwa branch organized a blood donation programme in Aralaganvila, for which an impressive number of 130 donors participated.

2nd June 2021 – The SLRCS has partnered up with Uber to provide 50,000 free rides to support the country’s vaccination programme and the front-liners in the #COVID19 response.

 

2nd June 2021 – Our Badulla & Puttalam branches continue to educate the public across the respective districts on the above via public announcements.

28th May 2021 – Volunteers from our Mullaitivu, Jaffna and Kandy branches continuously disinfect public areas, police stations & government offices to inhibit the spread of #COVID19

27th May 2021 – Our Badulla Branch began a #COVID19 health message dissemination programme in the Badulla district today. The programme is being conducted with the support of the Badulla District Secretariat, Provincial Ministry of Health and UNICEF Sri Lanka.

 

22nd May 2021 – During this lockdown period, our Colombo branch is providing transportation for the dedicated medical personnel at the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH).

21st May 2021 – Today the SLRCS donated personal protective equipment (PPE) to the Colombo South Teaching Hospital to support its medical staff. The stocks were handed over to the hospital’s Acting Director, K.D. Pradeep Wijesinghe, by Mr Naveendra Senarathna of the SLRCS.

 

13th May 2021 – Upon the request of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, our Galle branch handed over stocks of adult kits (containing rubber slippers, sarongs, sanitary napkins, bath towels, combs, torch, plastic plates, plastic cups, umbrella, bed sheets, soap & toothpaste) required for the COVID Unit and Palliative Unit of the hospital. They were handed over to Dr. Krishantha Perera, the hospital’s Senior Consultant Oncological Surgeon, and staff by Dr.Iresha Madurangani, the Branch Executive Officer of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society – Galle Branch

 

12th May 2021 – In honour of #InternationalNursesDay, the SLRCS donated personal protective equipment (PPE) to the Public Services United Nurses Union today. The stocks were handed over to the organization’s Chairman, the Ven. Muruttettuwe Ananda Thero, by Mr Naveendra Senarathna of the SLRCS.

11th May 2021 – It’s vital that our medical staff are supported in their efforts to keep the nation alive in these crucial times. Thus, our volunteers engage in blood donation campaigns regularly in recognition of this. Our Kilinochchi and Vavuniya branch volunteers participate and support one such recent campaign.

 

7th May 2021 – As COVID-19 rages so on, so does the persistence of our volunteers to prevent its spread. Our Colombo, Kurunegala and Kilinochchi branches continue disinfection activities in public areas to reduce #COVID19 transmission.

 

30th April 2021 – Volunteers from our Kurunegala and Kilinochchi branches persist in their mission of distributing leaflets in public areas to educate the public on COVID-19 prevention measures during these trying times.

 

29th April 2021 – Volunteers from our Badulla branch engaged in the disinfection of public areas in the Badulla town to reduce the risk of #COVID19 transmission.

 

20th April 2021 – As the COVID-19 epidemic continues to strike its blow across the country, it is imperative that our front-liners are given the necessary support to carry out their life-saving mission. Thus, upon the request of the Medical Superintendent of the Elpitiya Base Hospital, Dr. R.M. Ranagala, our Galle branch recently handed over stocks of patient care equipment (including mattresses, pillows, bed sheets, soap and other equipment) required for Ward 19 of the hospital to its Acting Director.

 

06th April 2021 – In the mission to support front-liners in the COVID-19 response, our Kandy branch conducted a blood donation campaign last week. A remarkable number of 188 donors participated in this crucial and noble initiative.

23rd March 2021 – The COVID-19 epidemic still surges on – and our efforts to prevent it must do likewise. The Nilpanagoda Unit of our Gampaha branch distributes educational leaflets in public places to spread awareness of COVID-19 prevention measures.

 

16th March 2021 – With the aim of supporting the front-liners in the nation’s #COVID19 response, our Galle branch organized a blood donation campaign at their branch premises yesterday. A noteworthy number of 60 individuals participated in this event and donated

 

15th March 2021 – Our Kandy branch conducted a blood donation campaign at the Udagama unit last week.

 

1st March 2021 – It is critical that we remain aware of the precautionary measures we need to take in the fight against COVID-19 as we go about our daily activities. And here’s our Galle branch conducting an awareness programme at the Thawalama Divisional Secretariat to do just this.

8th February 2021 – Every child deserves to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment – and amid the COVID-19 epidemic, one of the easiest and most important ways to stave the spread of the virus is to wash your hands frequently with soap and water. And this is being taught to the kids at the Red Cross International Nursery by our Galle branch volunteers as pictured below

6th October 2020 – Aiming to assist health authorities in halting the spread of the virulent COVID-19 epidemic, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated personal protective equipment to the Udugama Base Hospital today. The equipment was handed over to the Acting Consultant Psychiatrist of the hospital, Dr Chathura Abeysooriya, by Mr Upali Sirimanne the Honorary Vice President of the SLRCS.

5th October 2020 – In order to reduce the risk of transmission of the COVID-19 virus, our Colombo branch engaged in the disinfection of several public places, government offices, police stations and hospitals across the district.

5th October 2020 – In line with its ‘Suwa Wiru Garu Saru’ campaign which aims to assist medical professionals in combatting COVID-19, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated personal protective equipment (PPE) to the Wethara District Hospital today. The equipment was handed over to the District Medical Officer, Dr S.C.Wickramasinghe, by the SLRCS Colombo Branch Commitee member, Mr Arjun Abeysinghe.

4th October 2020 – Aiming to assist medical professionals in curbing the spread of COVID-19, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated personal protective equipment to the Rabukkana District Hospital today. The stocks were handed over to Dr. Kumar Wickramasinghe, Regional Director of Health Services Kegalle, and Dr. Suminda Gamage, Medical Superintendent of the Rabukkana Hospital, by the SLRCS Kandy Branch Executive Officer, Mr. Ananda Uyanwatte.

4th October 2020 – Aiming to assist medical professionals in curbing the spread of COVID-19, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated personal protective equipment to the Warakapola Base Hospital today. The stocks were handed over to Dr R.M.W.S.Rathnayaka, the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, by the SLRCS Kegalle Acting Branch Executive Officer, Ms Nimali.

3rd October 2020 – Amidst the COVID-19 epidemic, ‘Being Aware’ and ‘Staying Safe’ are two sides of the same coin. In this knowledge, our volunteers continue to spread awareness about COVID-19 prevention methods through educational materials and demonstrations across the island.

3rd October 2020 – Aiming to assist medical professionals in curtailing the spread of COVID-19, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated personal protective equipment & Surgical Masks to Dr. Prabath Weerarathna, The Director of the Kuliyapitiya Teaching Hospital today.

2nd October 2020 – With the aim of assisting the nation’s health authorities in this critical time, our volunteers from Vavuniya and Kandy branches have been providing administrative and frontline support to the Vavuniya District General Hospital and the Kandy National Hospital respectively.

 

2nd October 2020 – The need to curb the spread of COVID-19 remains as urgent as ever. Thus, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated personal protective equipment (PPE) to the Katana Medical Officer of Health today. The equipment was handed over to Dr Prasantha Piyadigama by Mr Anton Victoria, the Chairman of the SLRCS Gampaha branch.

30th October 2020 – Aiming to assist medical professionals in curtailing the spread of COVID-19, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated personal protective equipment to Dr Umesh of the Radawana Hospital today.
 

29th October 2020 –  In line with its ‘Suwa Wiru Garu Saru’ campaign, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated personal protective equipment to the National Hospital for Respiratory Diseases – Welisara today. The stocks were handed over to the hospital’s Director, Dr A.R.M. Thowfeek, by the SLRCS Gampaha Branch Executive Officer, Mr Ruwan Abeywardana.

28th October 2020 – Aiming to assist health authorities in halting the spread of the COVID-19, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated personal protective equipment (PPE) kits and masks to the Chilaw District General Hospital today. The equipment was handed over to the Director of the hospital, Dr K.P. Mallawarachchi, by the SLRCS Puttalam Branch Chairman, Mr Nazeem Marrikkar.

28th October 2020 – In light of the increasing prevalence of the COVID-19 epidemic, the SLRCS has been deploying its volunteers islandwide to raise awareness of preventive methods among communities and reduce the risk of transmission through disinfection activities as well.

27th October 2020 – Aiding the nation’s medical professionals in the fight against COVID-19, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated Viral Transport Media to the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health today. The equipment was handed over to the Director of the Unit, Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, by Mr. Naveendra Senarathna of the SLRCS.

27th October 2020 – Aiming to assist health authorities in halting the spread of the virulent COVID-19 epidemic, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated personal protective equipment (PPE) kits, surgical masks to Panadura Base Hospital today. The equipment was handed over to the Director of the hospital, Dr. Indrani Godakanda.

27th October 2020 – Personal protective equipment (PPE) was donated by the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society to the Induruwa Medical Officer of Health, Dr. M.W. Prasad De Silva, to assist the health authorities in their fight against COVID-19. The stocks were handed over by the Vice President of the SLRCS, Mr. Upali Sirimanne, today.

27th October 2020 – Awareness is the first step to prevention – and this has been never been more apparent than in the current COVID-19 context. Thus, Sri Lanka Red Cross Society volunteers and staff have been tirelessly engaging in spreading awareness and demonstrating prevention techniques to communities all across the island to bring about the necessary behaviour change and hence curtail the spread of the disease.

26th October 2020 – Aiming to assist health authorities in halting the spread of the virulent COVID-19 epidemic, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated personal protective equipment (PPE) kits, surgical masks, and N95 masks to Lady Ridgeway Street Hospital for Children today. The equipment was handed over to the Director of the hospital, Dr. G. Wijesuriya, by Mr. Naveendra Senarathna of the SLRCS.

23rd October 2020 – To assist our health authorities in these unprecedented times, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated personal protective equipment (PPE) kits, N95 masks and surgical masks to the Castle Street Hospital for Women today. The equipment were handed over to the hospital’s Deputy Director, Dr Pradeep Rathnasekara, by Mr Naveendra Senarathna of the SLRCS.

22nd October 2020 – Personal protective equipment (PPE) kits, N95 masks, and surgical masks were donated to the Kiribathgoda Base Hospital today to assist the nation’s medical professionals in their fight against COVID-19. The stocks were handed over to the hospital Director, Dr. Prageeth Dharshana, by the SLRCS Deputy Director-General, Mr. Anura Lekamge.

21st October 2020 – In order to fulfill the urgent requirements of the Dompe District Hospital in the fight against COVID-19, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society handed over personal protective equipment to the District Medical Officer, Dr. A.A.A.L.N. Perera, today. Furthermore, our volunteers also carried out the disinfection of the hospital premises.

20th October 2020 – In line with its ‘Suwa Wiru Garu Saru’ campaign which aims to assist medical professionals in combatting COVID-19, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated personal protective equipment (PPE) kits, N95 masks, and surgical masks to the District General Hospital Negombo today. The stocks were handed over to the Deputy Director of the hospital, Dr. W. Sumith Anton Fernando.

19th October 2020 – To assist our health authorities amid the raging COVID-19 epidemic, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated bed sheets and pillows to the Deputy Director General (Medical Service) of the Medical Supplies Division, Dr. D.R.K.Herath yesterday.

19th October 2020 – The need to curb the spread of COVID-19 is greater than ever. Thus, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated personal protective equipment (PPE) kits, surgical masks, and N95 masks to the Gampaha District General Hospital today. The equipment was handed over to the hospital Director, Dr. Saman Pathirana, and the Deputy Director, Dr. Priyantha Ileperuma.

16th October 2020 – Personal Protective Equipment and protective masks were handed over to the Homagama Base Hospital Today. The consignment was handed over to Dr. Janith Hettiarachchi, Director – Homagama Base Hospital under Sri Lanka Red Cross Societies “Suwa Viru – Garu Saru” Campaign.

15th October 2020 – Assisting the nation’s front-line workers, The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society handed over Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Kits and surgical masks to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital today. The consignment was received by the deputy director of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital Dr. Harshani Ubesekara.

14th October 2020 – Lending a hand to our noble health professionals in the fight against the COVID-19 epidemic, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated personal protective equipment (PPE) kits and surgical masks to the Wathupitiwala Base Hospital today. The equipment was handed over to Dr. Ramesh Alagiyawanna at the Wathutiwala Base hospital premises today.

13th October 2020 – Assisting the nation’s front-line workers, The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society handed over yet another stock of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Kits and surgical masks to Dr. Ruwan Ranasinghe, The Medical Officer of Health at Mirigama today.

12th October 2020 – Lending a hand to our noble health professionals in the fight against the COVID-19 epidemic, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated personal protective equipment (PPE) kits and N95 masks to the Ragama Hospital today. The equipment was handed over to Dr. Narmadha Nair, Senior Registrar of the Ragama Hospital by the Deputy Director-General of the SLRCS, Mr. Aruna Lekamge.

The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society handed over Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Kits and Face Masks for the Public Health Inspectors Association in support of the COVID-19 response in Sri Lanka. President of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society Mr. Jagath Abeysinghe and the Director-General Dr. Mahesh Gunasekara handed over the supplies at the Red Cross NHQ today. (10th October).

9th October 2020 – Assisting the nation’s front-line workers, The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society handed over yet another stock of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Kits and surgical masks to the office of the Medical Officer of Health at Divulapitiya today.

 

9th October 2020 – With the goal of assisting the nation’s front-line workers, The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society handed over PPE kits and face masks to the Minuwangoda Medical Officer of Health today.

8th October 2020 – In light of the prevailing situation and to assist the nation in its fight against COVID-19, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated personal protective equipment and surgical masks to the Bureau of the Commissioner-General of Rehabilitation. The equipment was handed over to Major General Dharshana Hettiarrachchi, Commissioner General Rehabilitation, and Brigadier Darshana Liyanage, Deputy Commissioner of General Rehabilitation, by the SLRCS President Mr. Jagath Abeysinghe today.

UPDATE #16

29th September 2020 – In order to support the country’s security forces in their management of quarantine centers in the island and in their fight against COVID-19, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated PPE kits and masks to the Jaffna Security Force Headquarters today. The equipment were handed over to Maj.Gen.B.A.L Rathnayaka by the SLRCS President, Mr Jagath Abeysinghe, the SLRCS Director-General, Dr. Mahesh Gunasekara, and the Chairman of the SLRCS Jaffna branch, Mr K.Balakrishnan.

23rd September 2020 – Inculcating the necessary behavioral change within school environments, amid the prevailing COVID-19 epidemic, is the mainstay of our ‘Safe Schools’ programme. Our Jaffna branch recently hosted training for students and staff within schools in the district.

17th September 2020 – Seeking to spread awareness about COVID-19 prevention, our Galle branch recently conducted a training programme for 100 female graduates at the Boossa Army Camp Regimental Training School in Sri Lanka.

14th September 2020 – With the goal of assisting the nation’s front line workers and enhancing its testing capacity, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, in partnership with Coca-Cola handed over PCR kits and Viral Transport Media to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital today. The equipment was handed over to the Deputy Director Dr Harshani Ubesekara, Deputy Director Dr Nishani Ubesekara, Senior Oncosurgeon Dr Krishantha Perera, Nayomi Danthanarayana Consultant Virologist and Senior MTL Mr Kandambi, by Mr Upali Sirimanne the SLRCS Vice President and Chairman of the SLRCS Galle branch, Mr Pramudith Rupasinghe SLRCS Head of Operations, the Galle Branch Executive Officer Ms Iresha Madurangi, and the Coca Cola Company’s Director of Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability, Mr. Lakshan Madurasinghe. Furthermore, a freezer for the storage of equipment was handed over to the Virology Unit of the hospital as well.

 

08th September 2020 – The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, in partnership with Coca-Cola, handed over PCR kits to the Medical Research Institute (MRI) of Sri Lanka to strengthen the nation’s testing capacity during the COVID-19 epidemic. The PCR kits were handed over to the MRI Director Dr. Jayaruwan Bandara by the Coca Cola Company’s Director of Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability, Mr. Lakshan Madurasinghe, and the Chairman and Branch Executive Officer of the SLRCS Colombo branch, Mr.Rukshan Peiris and Ms. Kumari Kothalawala respectively.

07th September 2020 – With the goal of assisting the nation’s front line workers and enhancing its testing capacity, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, in partnership with Coca-Cola handed over PCR kits to the Director of the National Hospital-Kandy, Dr. R.M.S.K. Ratnayake and Consultant Urologist, Dr. M.R.V. Muthugala. The PCR kits were handed over by the Director General of the SLRCS, Dr Mahesh Gunasekara, along with the Branch Executive Officer of the SLRCS Kandy branch, Mr Ananda Uyanwatte.

04th September 2020 – Our branches continue to provide administrative support to our noble medical professionals amid COVID-19. 03rd September 2020 – Aiming to dynamize the delivery of COVID-19 prevention messaging for school students, our Vavuniya branch handed over and installed sign boards with key health messages to selected national schools under the SLRCS COVID-19 response. The Director of Education, Regional Director of Health Services and operational officials within the district participated in this event as well.

03rd September 2020 – With the objective of strengthening the nation’s health system during this critical time, Coca-Cola with its implementing partner the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, has donated 16,800 PCR Kits and 17,000 Viral Transport Media (VTM) to the Ministry of Health to enhance the testing capacity for COVID-19 in Sri Lanka. The event which took place at the Temple Trees yesterday was graced by His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, the Coca Cola Company’s Director of Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability, Mr. Lakshan Madurasinghe, the Managing Director of Coca-Cola Beverages Sri Lanka Ltd. 31st August 2020 – The necessity of being aware of its prevention only increases with the escalating COVID-19 cases in the country. Thus, our volunteers from Vavuniya and Galle branches are taking urgent strides to spread awareness within key areas to keep communities informed. 28th August 2020 – Instilling awareness of responsible action within young minds during the COVID-19 epidemic is one of the primary goals of our ‘Safe Schools’ programme. Hence, our Jaffna branch has undertaken training sessions for students and staff in selected schools within the district to make this objective a reality.

27th August 2020 – The SLRCS strives to ensure that the knowledge of COVID-19 prevention reaches every corner of the island. With this goal in mind, our Kandy branch conducted an awareness campaign in various locations across the district to raise awareness of the epidemic among communities.

26th August 2020 – In pursuit of reinforcing the nation’s health system and assisting its noble front-liners, Coca-Cola in partnership with the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated 17,000 Viral Transportation Media (VTM) and 16,800 PCR kits worth LKR 50 million to the Ministry of Health today. Gracing this event was the Sri Lankan Minister of Health, Hon. Mrs. Pavithradevi Wanniarachchi, the Coca Cola Company’s Director of Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability, Mr. Lakshan Madurasinghe, the Managing Director of Coca-Cola Beverages Sri Lanka Ltd. Mr. Mayank Arora and Managing Director of Coca-Cola Sri Lanka Private Limited, Mr. Pankaj Sinha – along with the Honorary President and Director General of the SLRCS, Mr Jagath Abeysinghe and Dr Mahesh Gunasekara respectively.

21st August 2020 – Acting responsibly in an epidemic is a task to be borne by all – young and old alike. And the trainings conducted by the SLRCS under our ‘Safe Schools’ program aim to do just this. Here is our Kandy branch training and educating school students and staff at the Lagamuwa Maha Vidyalaya (M.V.), Akurana Muslim Balika M.V. and the Minigamuwa M.V in Kandy this week.

20th August 2020 – The SLRCS is taking an active stance on promoting the necessary behavioural change required to combat COVID-19 among communities. For instance, our Vavuniya branch has established hand-washing stations in public places across the district to promote one of the golden rules of preventing COVID-19: ‘Wash Your Hands Regularly’.

20th August 2020 – The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society continues to train students and school staff under our IFRC-supported ‘Safe Schools’ programme, educating them about creating a safe school environment in the time of COVID-19. Here we have our Kurunegala branch conducting a training program at the Moragane Maha Vidyalaya this week.

17th August 2020 – The only commonality between the COVID-19 epidemic and the Sri Lanka Red Cross is that neither entity discriminates! Hence, our Trincomalee branch volunteers carried out disinfection activities in all religious areas of worship across the district last week to assist in the prevention of COVID-19.

17th August 2020 – As schools reopen across the nation, students have to adapt to newer, safer measures in the COVID-19 context. As such, our ‘Safe Schools’ program continues to promote and raise awareness about the necessary behavioral changes required for a safe school environment. 14th August 2020 – In a nation transformed by the COVID-19 epidemic, the importance of knowing how to prevent it never diminishes! Here we have the volunteers from our Puttalam branch conducting awareness-raising activities in public areas across the Puttalam district.

29th July 2020 – Our Ratnapura district recently conducted a ‘Training of Teachers’ training for the academic staff and student representatives of the R/C.C.Tamil Maha Vidyalaya-Balangoda under our ‘Safe Schools’ programme about the COVID-19 preventive measures to be taken within a school environment.

17th July 2020 – As part of our ‘Suwa Viru Garu Saru’ campaign, the SLRCS handed over personal protective equipment (PPE) to the Commander of Security Forces – East, Major Gen.Senarath Bandara, to assist the forces in the maintenance of quarantine centers within the island.

17th July 2020 – In light of the emerging COVID-19 cases in the Polonnaruwa district and upon the urgent request by the Regional Director of Health Services, we handed over PPE kits, N95 masks and surgical masks to assist them in the fight against the epidemic. This event – which is part of our ‘Suwa Viru Garu Saru’ campaign – was graced by the SLRCS President Mr. Jagath Abeysinghe (SLRCS President), Dr Mahesh Gunasekara (SLRCS Director General), Mr. W.A. Darmasiri (District Secretariat – Polonnaruwa) and Dr. W.K.W.S. Kumarawansha (Regional Director Health Services – Polonnaruwa).

16th July 2020 – As COVID-19 cases surge anew across the island, the Standard Chartered Bank has partnered up with the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society at this crucial time to assist our health authorities and procure the vitally necessary PCR test kits for the Ministry of Health. Pictured here is the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Chief Executive Officer of the Standard Chartered Bank, Mr. Bingumal Thewarathanthri, and the Director General of the SLRCS, Dr. Mahesh Gunasekara at the SLRCS National Headquarters today – signifying a partnership under which USD 200,000 will be dedicated towards the above endeavour.

13th July 2020 – With the overarching goal of ensuring the safety of school environments during COVID-19, our Badulla branch conducted a Training of Trainers (T.o.T) training on School Risk Assessment in coordination with the District Disaster Management Centre Unit, Regional Directorate of Health Services-Badulla and the Provincial Education Department-Uva Province last week. Participants of this IFRC-supported initiative included teachers, Assistant Directors and Development Officers attached to Zonal Education Offices, and In-Service Advisors in the Education sector – who in turn will conduct risk assessments of their own within all schools in the Uva Province to minimize the threat of COVID-19.

10th July 2020 – Matters of safety are not to be toyed with – regardless of how young one is. As such, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society is vigorously implementing its ‘Safe Schools’ programme to ensure that the nation’s youth are well protected and prepared to resume school activities amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Our Galle branch, for instance, has undertaken the task of donating hand-washing stations, protective equipment and easily accessible communication materials to the Bentara Gamini National School this week, with the support of the Director of the Bentara Educational Zone, Mr I.I.Jayaratne. Staff from the SLRCS Headquarters and SLRCS volunteers participated in this endeavor as well.

9th July 2020 – Awareness is the first step to prevention, and our branches are taking the necessary steps to facilitate this process. Here we have our Monaragala branch volunteers conducting awareness activities on COVID-19 preventive measures in public transport and crowded areas within the district.

7th July 2020 – Numerous disinfection activities were carried out by our Mullaitivu branch volunteers across the schools in the district this week.

5th July 2020 – Reaching out to those in need of medical assistance during an ongoing epidemic is absolutely crucial. As such, our Kandy branch conducted a health camp in the Udunuwara Division of the district in coordination with the Kandy Society of Medicine to spread awareness & provide free medicine & other medical services to those who lack access to them. Along with our Kandy branch volunteers, 16 senior consultant doctors from various health sectors took part in this COVID19-integrated initiative yesterday & more than 400 individuals benefited from it.

4th July 2020 – Where better than a school to begin the installation of positive behavioral change within young minds amidst the prevailing COVID-19 epidemic? As the nation gradually returns to normalcy & schools reopen for children & youth across the country, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society embarks on its latest venture in cooperation with international and local corporate donors – our ‘Safe Schools’ Programme. Targeting 9 districts and 127 schools, the SLRCS has already commenced activities such as training of school staff at the behest of the Ministry of Education as pictured below.

2nd July 2020 – The one thing that should spread faster than the coronavirus is the knowledge of how to prevent it from ever spreading in the first place! Here we have our Mullaitivu branch volunteers building awareness of COVID-19 preventive methods among the communities of the Mullaitivu district.

30th June 2020 – Our branches are persisting in their mission of disseminating knowledge and providing material support in the fight against COVID-19. Our Galle branch, for instance, recently distributed awareness materials on COVID-19 preventive measures and donated beds and necessary materials for school sick rooms to the Divisional Education Director Mr. I. Jayarathna in support of our Safe Schools programme.

19th June 2020 – With the goal of raising awareness among the public, our Galle branch deployed its volunteers to distribute communication materials regarding COVID-19 prevention at the Baddegama District Hospital today.

16th June 2020 – Our Galle branch carried out awareness-raising activities by distributing communication materials regarding the methods of preventing COVID-19 at the Maternal Care Unit at Gramodaya Health Centre in Galle yesterday.

15th June 2020 – Preparation is key! The SLRCS, in partnership with the Disaster Management Centre, National Disaster Relief Services Centre and health department officers, commenced the operationalization of COVID-19-sensitive disaster preparedness and response activities in 5 high flood and landslide-prone districts of Colombo, Kalutara, Gampaha, Ratnapura and Puttalam during the South West Monsoon period.

11th June 2020 – In honour of our ‘Suwa Viru Garu Saru’ campaign, personal protective equipment (PPE) kits were handed over to the Ragama Hospital today. We are very grateful for our Movement partners as this initiative was supported by the Singapore Red Cross who provided the PPE kits, and the Red Cross Society of China, who provided the surgical and N-95 masks.

10th June 2020 – Protecting our Protectors! To assist our medical heroes amidst the COVID-19 epidemic, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society handed over 200 personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to the Nuwara Eliya General Hospital COVID-19 Unit today. The kits were handed over to the Hospital Director, Dr Mahendra Senevirathna by Mr Rohana Pushpakumara of the Nuwara Eliya District Secretariat, the SLRCS Nuwara Eliya Branch Chairman, Mr S.Jagatheeswaran and the SLRCS Nuwara Eliya Branch Executive Officer, Mr R.S.Chandrasiri.

8th June 2020 – With the objective of providing relief to vulnerable groups during these trying times, the SLRCS resumed its initiative of distributing relief packs to refugees and asylum-seekers in the Gampaha district last Wednesday in partnership with The Coca-Cola Foundation. The event was organized by the SLRCS Gampaha branch and took place in the ZOA Negombo office. This intervention benefited 150 families and was attended by the SLRCS Gampaha branch Chairman and a representative of the Coca-Cola company.

6th June 2020 – The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society proceeded with its dry ration distribution campaign in partnership with The Coca-Cola Foundation today. The event, which took place at the Beruwala Divisional Secretariat, was organized by the SLRCS Kalutara branch and was graced by the Director General of the SLRCS and the Chairman of the SLRCS Kalutara branch, Mr. M.K.D. Chandrasiri.

4th June 2020 – The Sri Lanka Red Cross initiative of distributing dry ration packs to vulnerable families during the COVID-19 epidemic, in partnership with The Coca-Cola Foundation, is proceeding steadily through this week as well. Benefiting 175 families, today’s event was graced by the Director-General of the SLRCS and a representative of The Coca-Cola Company and was organized by the Bluemandhal Police and Women in Management – Sri Lanka.

3rd June 2020 – To support national efforts against the COVID-19 epidemic, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society handed over personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to the Office of the Governor of Eastern Province today.

2nd June 2020 – It’s more important than ever to be informed! Owing to the prevalence of COVID-19 in the island, our dedicated volunteers have been involved in the task of raising awareness on the necessary precautions to be taken among communities. Such activities have been implemented in many locations including our branch premises, orphanages, and elders’ homes in Mullaitivu, Galle, Polonnaruwa, and Batticaloa. Our volunteers adopt interactive approaches such as hand-washing demonstrations, in compliance with social distancing guidelines, to affect the necessary behavioral change within communities.

1st June 2020 – With the objective of fulfilling the basic nutritional needs of vulnerable communities amidst the COVID-19 epidemic, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society – in partnership with the الهلال الاحمر القطري Qatar Red Crescent – launched a 3-day Food and Nutrition Assistance Programme in the districts of Ampara, Kegalle and Kurunegala this week. 400 families were benefited by the distribution of the aforesaid dry ration packs.

1st June 2020 – Our Galle branch conducted an awareness program by distributing communication materials regarding the methods of preventing COVID-19 in religious places of worship throughout Galle yesterday.

30th May 2020 – Today the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society continued with its initiative of distributing dry ration packs, sanitary packs, and first aid kits within the districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Puttalam and Kalutara in partnership with The Coca-Cola Foundation. The packs were handed over by the Chairman of the Puttalam SLRCS branch and a representative of the Coca Cola company.

29th May 2020 – During this critical time, our Vavuniya branch and it’s Youth Department organized and participated in a Blood Donor camp upon the urgent request of the Blood Bank of Vavuniya yesterday.

28th May 2020 – In partnership with The Coca-Cola Foundation, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society commenced its initiative of distributing 6000 dry ration packs, sanitary packs and first aid kits within the districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Puttalam, and Kalutara today, and some were handed over by Pankaj Sinha, the Managing Director of Srilanka & Maldives of the Coca-Cola company. This initiative targets those rendered highly vulnerable by the ongoing COVID19 epidemic.

27th May 2020 – Our Jaffna Branch resumed its Disinfection Programme at the Jaffna Central Bus stand and the Chavakachcheri Magistrate Court Complex today.

25th May 2020 – Today the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society handed over personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to the Colombo Municipal Council in aid of their COVID19 response. The kits were handed over to the Mayor of Colombo, Rosy Senanayake, the Colombo Municipal Commissioner, Roshanie Dissanayake, and to the Chief Medical Officer of Health CMC, Dr. R.L.DE S. Wijayamuni by the member of the SLRCS Central Governing Board, Dr. Amila Kankanamge.

22nd May 2020 – Today the Deputy Director-General of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, Aruna Lekamge, handed over personal protective equipment (PPE) to the Security and Engineer Services Branch of the Sri Lanka Army upon their request.

21st May 2020 – In order to assist the medical professionals during this COVID19 epidemic, our Vavuniya Branch deployed its volunteers to lend the necessary administrative support to the District General Hospital in Vavuniya this week.

20th May 2020 – Today the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society implemented its food pack distribution campaign, with the support of the International Committee of the Red Cross, in Colombo today – targeting the most vulnerable families in light of the COVID19 crisis. The event was graced by the Honorary President of the SLRCS, the ICRC Head of Delegation, and the Chairman of the SLRCS Colombo branch.

 

20th May 2020 – Today the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society handed over personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to the Director of the National Dental Hospital of Sri Lanka.

19th May 2020 – Personal protective equipment (PPE) kits were handed over to the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva, by the Central Governing Board Member of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, Dr. Amila Kankanamge today.

18th May 2020 – The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society resumed its island-wide initiative for the second week to provide dry ration packs and food vouchers for the most vulnerable households in the context of the COVID-19 epidemic. 16th May 2020 – In order to assist the health professionals on the front lines of the COVID19 epidemic, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society handed over personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to the Wathupitiwala District Base Hospital as part of its ‘Suwa Viru Garu Saru’ campaign today.

15th May 2020 – As part of our ‘Suwa Viru Garu Saru’ campaign, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society handed over personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to the Director of the Horana Base Hospital yesterday.

15th May 2020 – In light of the ongoing COVID19 crisis, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society engaged in an island-wide initiative to provide dry ration packs to the high-risk districts of Jaffna, Puttalam, Kalutara, and Kandy, while food vouchers were also distributed to the remaining districts. Supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross, this initiative targeted 7200 households and aimed at assisting the marginalized and those rendered highly vulnerable by the pandemic.

13th May 2020 – Today personal protective equipment (PPE) kits were handed over to the Acting Chief of Defence Staff and the Commander of the Sri Lankan Army, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, by the Deputy Director-General of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, Aruna Lekamge. The programme is in place with the media partnership of the Asia Broadcasting Corporation.

11th May 2020 – Disinfection activities were carried out by our Kegalle branch in the premises of the Department of Motor Traffic, the Provincial Agriculture office, Land Registry office, Coconut Cultivation Board, the Labour Office and the Divisional Secretariat in Kegalle.

10th May 2020 – Disinfection activities were carried out by our Colombo branch at the Department of Meteorology, the Gunasinghepura Central Bus Stand, the Ratmalana Divisional Secretariat and the Ayurvedic Hospital in Moratuwa. 5th May 2020 – With the support of the International Committee of the Red Cross, our Colombo branch engaged in the disinfection of the Battaramulla courts and the court complexes in Borella, Nugegoda, Mount Lavinia, Ratmalana, Moratuwa, Kaduwela, Homagama, and Avissawella today.

4th May 2020 – Disinfection activities were carried out by the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society in partnership with Dettol Sri Lanka within the police stations of Kandy, Rathnapura and Jaffna today.

22nd April 2020 – The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society proceeded with its Disinfection Programme in partnership with Dettol Sri Lanka in the districts of Colombo, Jaffna, Gampaha, and Kalutara today.

 

21st April 2020 – The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society resumed its Disinfection Programme, in partnership with Dettol Sri Lanka, within the public areas of Puttalam, Gampaha, Kalutara, and Kandy today.

20th April 2020 – Phase 2 of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society’s Disinfection Programme, in partnership with Dettol Sri Lanka, progressed in full swing across the districts of Colombo, Kalutara, and Jaffna today.

20th April 2020 – During this critical time, our Kandy branch has deployed its volunteers to assist the hospital staff in administrative procedures of the Kandy General Hospital as requested.

20th April 2020 – Today the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society handed over personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to the Deputy Director of the Colombo General Hospital, Dr. Chandana Gajanayake in order to support the medical professionals working on the frontlines of the COVID-19 epidemic.

18th April 2020 – President of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society Mr. Jagath Abeysinghe called on the Archbishop of Colombo, His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith at the Archbishop’s house earlier today. President of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society handed over personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to His Eminence upon the latter’s request in order to support the Catholic Church’s safety measures against COVID 19. Discussions were also held to carry out SLRCS disinfection activities within the Bishop House and areas of similar interest.

16th April 2020 – The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, in partnership with Dettol Sri Lanka, commenced its district-wide task of disinfecting the police Stations of Jaffna.

16th April 2020 – The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, in partnership with Dettol Sri Lanka, engaged in disinfecting the Colombo-Gunasinghapura Bus Stand as per the instructions of the Dam Street Police Station due to the crowds of people present in the vicinity.

16th April 2020 – Today the President of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society handed over personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to the Sri Lankan Ayurvedic Commissioner, Mr. K.D.C.S. Kumaratunga, in order to assist the Ayurvedic hospitals and doctors in their healing mission to combat COVID-19.

16th April 2020 – Disinfection activities carried out by the SLRCS within the police stations of Colombo.

16th April 2020 – Our team undertook the task of disinfecting the police stations within the Colombo, Kalutara and Gampaha districts this morning. We are grateful to Dettol Sri Lanka and Ceypetco for supporting us in this endeavor!

14th April – Launched the TELECROSS Service, A hotline number was introduced to provide Psychosocial Support for those who need it.

11th April 2020 – The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society handed over Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Kits and N95 Masks for the All Island Public Health Inspectors Association in support of COVID-19 response in Sri Lanka. President of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society Mr. Jagath Abeysinghe handed over the supplies to the chairman of the All-Island PHI Association Mr. Upul Rohana at Red Cross Society National Headquarters today (11th April).

8th April 2020 –  SLRCS handed over Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Kits to The Sri Jayawardenepura General Hospital and the Department of Anesthesia of the Colombo General Hospital.

7th April 2020 – The President of the Sri Lankan Red Cross Society handed over personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to Public Health Inspectors of Colombo to assist in their COVID19 preventive initiatives. President of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society Jagath Abeysinghe handed over these PPE Kits to a group of Public Health Inspectors at the Red Cross NHQ yesterday.

7th April 2020 – Yesterday the SLRCS, in partnership with CAMSO Loadstar and the Chairman of ESOFT Metro Campus, Dr. Dayan Rajapakse, donated personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to the National Corona Testing Lab at the Sri Jayawardenapura University.

6th April 2020 – The Sri Lanka Red Cross commenced our disinfection program in the police stations of the Kalutara district and resumed the task for the fifth day within Colombo as well. We are grateful for the support of Dettol Sri Lanka.

6th April 2020 – The President of the Sri Lankan Red Cross Society handed over personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to the Sri Lankan Special Task Force to assist in their COVID19 preventive initiatives.

6th April 2020 – Our team took measures to disinfect the Kirulapona Police station this morning. We are grateful to Dettol Sri Lanka for supporting us in this endeavor!

5th April 2020 – Our volunteers and staff members throughout the branches of Nuwara Eliya, Trincomalee and Vavuniya have distributed dry food packs to families that have been rendered extremely vulnerable due to the COVID19 epidemic.

5th April 2020 – Our team took measures to disinfect the Boralesgamuwa Police station this morning. We are grateful to Dettol Sri Lanka and Ceypetco for supporting us in this endeavor!


UPDATE #2 –  (3rd April 2020) Sri Lanka Red Cross Society donated 500 personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to the Director of the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH), Dr A.M.Hasitha Aththanayake, as part of our ‘Suwa Viru Garu Saru’ campaign. The PPE kits were handed over by the SLRCS President, Mr Jagath Abeysinghe and our campaign partner Lion Arjun Abeysinghe. This campaign aims to donate 100,000 of these critically essential PPE kits to our selfless medical professionals during this epidemic.

Colombo branch initiated a program to disinfect all the police stations within the Western Province. This demarcates the initial step taken by the organization in this preventive initiative. Thank you Dettol Sri Lanka for supporting us!

Our Nuwara Eliya branch began a district-wide initiative to disinfect the settlements in the surrounding estate areas in light of the prevailing epidemic.

 

UPDATE #1 – 1st April 2020 – In solidarity with the Sri Lanka Red Cross ‘Sura Viru Garu Saru’ campaign, the President of the Sri Lanka China Business Council, Thulitha Mendis, donated 6500 face masks to the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) yesterday.

 

The Sri Lanka Red Cross persists in its endeavor to raise awareness through the mobilization of its 25 branches across the island – the goals of promoting personal hygiene and respiratory hygiene being among the primary ones. Various communication materials regarding the methods of curtailing the epidemic have been distributed widely for the purpose of educating the public. Similar tasks have also been carried out by the organization in relation to governmental authorities like the Ministry of Health and the Sri Lanka Police.

In addition to this, tokens of personal protection equipment (including but not limited to, protective kits and masks) have been disbursed to the relevant governmental institutions like the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (IDH) and Base Hospitals throughout the country. This initiative was undertaken by the Sri Lankan Red Cross to provide assistance to those professionals heavily engaged in combatting the coronavirus epidemic.
