Red Cross Societies of China & Sri Lanka signs cooperation agreements towards implementing health projects in Sri Lanka

03/11/2016 – Colombo, Sri Lanka: The Red Cross Society of China and the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society signed a cooperation agreement that would enhance the support towards humanitarian work in Sri Lanka. The agreement was signed between the visiting Vice President of RCSCĀ Haijing Wang and the Director General of Sri Lanka Red Cross Neville Nanayakkara. In the first stage 100,000 USD was granted towards water and sanitation projects in the South of Sri Lanka.

The Chinese delegation also visited Kandy and Galle and inspected the projects they undertook during the tsunami period. They also took time to visit the people still stranded at welfare camps in Kegalle after the landslide.

The new health care project aims to change behavior and reduce vulnerability among target population/groups in relation to prioritized health problems. The programme will focus on nutrition education programs for the areas where malnutrition is relatively high, while promoting organic farming for a healthy life style. The programme also aims towards implementing a Chronic Kidney Disease Prevention Program along with hygiene promotion programs.

Meanwhile after signing the agreement the Vice President of RCSC held discussions with the President of Sri Lanka Red Cross with regard to future cooperation and projects.
