07/12/2017 – Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka: The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society under the guidance of its President Jagath Abeysinghe and the patronage of the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka His Excellency Maithripala Sirisena, took measures to distribute relief items to families suffering from kidney disease in the district of Polonnaruwa yesterday.

This is part of the commitment made by Sri Lanka Red Cross to support Programme to combat kidney disease by the Task Force appointed by H.E the President.

The ceremony to distribute relief items took place at the new Economic Centre of Polonnaruwa with the participation of H.E the President, the President of Sri Lanka Red Cross and several other dignitaries.

During the ceremony, the Sri Lanka Red Cross distributed 400 school kits and water filters for students from families that are suffering kidney diseases. This would aim at ensuring that their financial burdens would not dent the education of the children of these families. 300 pregnant mothers too received hygiene kits at the event.

The President also presented medals and certificates to Junior Red Cross Circle members who excelled in First Aid.

Later the President also distributed tokens of appreciation to volunteers who assisted the Red Cross during the past 10 years in order to support the humanitarian work carried out by the Society.
