»  Water and Sanitation for Resettlement Housing, Galle District ["Galle Wells and Latrines"] - $ 1,517,332

Goal: Provide support and assistance to the SLRCS in its efforts to reduce the impact on the tsunami affected families.
Objectives:
  • Improved hygiene practices at community and household level
  • Increased access to and use of sustainable sources of safe water
  • Improved sanitation at the community level
  • Improved capacity of the SLRCS to manage projects
Accomplishments to Date:
  • Provided 13 houses or schools with access to safe water sources (rainwater tanks, household wells, connections to the water supply network)
  • Connected 143 houses/schools to sanitation systems
  • Trained 161 people in good hygiene practices
  • Reached 2,322 beneficiaries to date


»  Improvement of Water Supplies in Galle District - Galle 10 Project - $ 3,000,596

Goal: Provide water supply facilities to government resettlement area for tsunami displaced families. The resettlement area is located in Ahangama, Habaraduwa, and Hadiwatta areas.
Objectives:
  • Increase access to and use of safe water in target communities
  • To enhance the capacity of the SLRCS to manage WatSan projects


»  Community-Based Water Supply & Environmental Sanitation in Matara - $ 2,157,133

Goal: Construct and rehabilitate wells, rainwater systems and latrines and establish a comprehensive hygiene promotion program.
Objectives:
  • Improve water sanitation and hygiene and provide access to safe water in tsunami-affected regions
  • Develop SLRCS capacity to implement a hygiene promotion program
Accomplishments to Date:
  • Built 197 wells that provide water to 1,415 people
  • Provided 678 houses or schools with access to safe water sources (rainwater tanks, household wells, connections to the water supply network)
  • Connected 1,024 houses/schools to sanitation systems
  • Trained 1,7340 people in good hygiene practices
  • Reached 11,500 beneficiaries to date

»  Community-Based Water Supply & Environmental Sanitation in Hambantota - $ 423,284

Goal: Construct and rehabilitate wells, rainwater systems and latrines and establish a comprehensive hygiene promotion program.
Objectives:
  • Improve water sanitation and hygiene and provide access to safe water in tsunami-affected regions
  • Develop SLRCS capacity to implement a hygiene promotion program

Accomplishments to Date:
  • Provided 1 school with sufficient water for sanitation systems to operate
  • Provided 19 gender segregated sanitation facilities

Goal: To maintain low rates of mortality/morbidity associated with diarrheal diseases by promoting the use of simple, low cost household water filtration technology combined with hygiene education.
Objectives:
  • Increase access to sustainable sources of potable water
  • Improve hygiene practices and understanding related to water-borne disease transmission at the community and household level
  • Improve local capacity to design, manage and sustain safe water supply projects
Accomplishments to Date:
  • Distributed ceramic water filters to 2,516 households
  • Trained 2,516 households in good hygiene practices

»  ROTARY School Water & Sanitation in Galle - $ 110,127

Goal: Support water and sanitation component of the Rotary's reconstruction of tsunami-affected schools.
Objectives:
  • Restore water and sanitation facilities for tsunami-destroyed schools
  • Improve hygiene practices of school children
Accomplishments to Date:
  • Provided 3 schools toilets and with sufficient water for sanitation facilities to operate.
  • Established 3 hygiene clubs with 74 members to date.
  • Reached 1,685 beneficiaries to date
The former Randombe Junior School, located near the beach in Ambalangoda, was completely destroyed when the Tsunami struck December 26, 2004.

Goal: Promote adaptive post-tsunami adjustment based on protective factors identified by community and school populations.
Objectives:
  • Develop national capacity to implement programs which enhance community psychological and social well-being
  • Promote psychological and social well-being of the community through schools
  • Strengthen community protective factors (resiliencies)
  • Assist community members to establish a "sense of place"
Accomplishments to Date:
  • Working in 15 schools and 15 communities in Galle District.
  • Conducted 216 community activities to establish residents' sense of place and develop community resilience.
  • Renovated 6 community centers.
  • Distributed 27,006 school kits and first aid kits to encourage creative and expressive activities and protect students' health.
  • Trained 1,050 people to provide psychological first aid.
  • Reached 43,000 beneficiaries to date.

»  Environmental Sanitation cash for Work in Hambantota - $ 476,166

Goal: To improve the environmental sanitation around the homes of tsunami-affected families and provide them with much needed cash income.
Objectives:
  • Improve tsunami-affected communities' environment and sanitation
  • Reduce the economic impact of the disaster by providing employment opportunities to the affected families through cash-for-work program
Project Completed.
Accomplishments include:
  • Employed 960 people to clean up their communities. Participants in this cash for work program:
    • Removed 10,655 cubic meters of debris
    • Cleared 4,488 acres of land
  • Provided 4,800 people with increased income for food and other basic necessities

»  Environmental Sanitation in Hambantota - $476,166

Goal: To improve the environmental sanitation around the homes of tsunami-affected families and provide them with much needed cash income.
Objectives:
  • Improve tsunami-affected communities' environment and sanitation
  • Reduce the economic impact of the disaster by providing employment opportunities to the affected families through cash-for-work program.
Project Completed. Accomplishments include:

»  Environmental Sanitation cash for Work in Matara - $ 221,519

Goal: To improve the environmental sanitation around the homes of tsunami-affected families and provide them with much needed cash income.
Objectives:
  • Improve tsunami-affected communities' environment and sanitation
  • Reduce the economic impact of the disaster by providing employment opportunities to the affected families through cash-for-work program
Project Completed.
Accomplishments include:
  • Employed 699 people to clean up their communities. Participants in this cash for work program:
    • Cleaned 19,251 square meters of canals and coir pits
    • Cleared 34 acres of land
  • Provided 3,495 people with increased income for food and other basic necessities
Coir pit before:
Following the tsunami hundreds of coir pits along Sri Lanka's southern coast were polluted with debris such as building materials, plastic products, fallen trees and sewage. The contaminated water is a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes carrying deadly viruses such as malaria, dengue or failaria.
Coir pit after:
Once cleaned, the coir pits are filled with coconut husks, which soak for up to six months in order to remove the coir. Coir is used to make rope, mats, brooms, picture frames, brooms and brushes.
