»  Refurbishing Ambalantota Hospital in Hambantota

The project aims to refurbish the health care infrastructure in the Ambalantota Peripheral Unit, a small hospital in the district. This includes refurbishing the existing buildings and constructing a new building for pediatrics, emergency and administration. Walkways, guard room and fences will be constructed. Equipment that meets Ministry of Health standards will be provided, along with emergency training, computer training, policy and procedures, and other capacity building.



»  Refurbishing Velvetithurai Hospital in Jaffna

The objective is the refurbishment of health care infrastructure in the Velvetithurai District Hospital in Jaffna. The plans for the hospital are designed with input from the health community and the Ministry of Health. This includes refurbishing existing buildings as well as converting one room into an emergency room; constructing generator housing; constructing female toilet/shower block; providing new furnishings; providing new equipment as per Ministry of Health's standards; and providing training as per needs assessment.



»  Seenimodera Water Supply System for 400 families in Tangalle

Provision of safe and sustainable water supply for permanent housing scheme at Seenimodara for 350 tsunami displaced families and 50 families from the existing Morkaetiya village. This will include the construction of 20m water tower, treatment plant, pump house, and the installation of pumps, pipeworks, and other works associated with distributing potable water. The facility will be owned by NWS&DB and managed by a community based organisation. ARC will provide support during the 12 month handover process and help build the capacity of the CBO.




»  Village and Housing Development for four sites in Jaffna

A cornerstone of ARCs housing program in the North, this project will provide 200 permanent houses on two sites in Jaffna, Mamunai and Taliyadi. Village infrastructure will be provided for 490 families in Mamunai, Taliyadi, Maruthankerny South and Chempiyanpattu South. This includes internal and approach roads, water supply, sanitation, public health, community buildings and other services.



»  Livelihoods for Housing Recipients in Jaffna

As part of ARC's holistic and integrated approach, this program provides livelihood activities and infrastructure for beneficiaries of the ARC Jaffna Housing project and surrounding communities. This includes physical infrastructure to make existing activities more productive and open the opportunities for new activities; training of villagers to improve their skills and improve income generation; and developing a long term livelihood program for the communities.



»  Assisting Build the Capacity of SLRCS Jaffna Branch

The objective is to improve the capacity of the SLRCS Jaffna Branch to meet the needs of vulnerable people in Jaffna, including capacity to respond to future disasters. This includes improved governance and management structures; training for Branch officers; recruiting, training and retaining an extra 50% of specialised volunteers; develop Red Cross Youth Programme; and establish community based group for disaster preparedness.



»  Expanding and Developing the SLRCS First Aid Program

Prevention is often better than the cure. This program aims to increase SLRCS and community capacity to respond to accidents and emergencies with a focus on first aid training. This includes human resource development as part of capacity building; provide project hardware; train 14 first aid instructors; basic and advanced first aid training for 1680 and 250 people respectively; junior first aid training for 420 school children; and plan and resource a sustainable first aid program.




»  Providing a Water Bowser to SLRCS for IDPs in Hambantota

ARC provided a water bowser to SLRCS in Hambantota. For six months, ARC funded the water bowser to supply potable water to tsunami affected people in transitional camps. 450 tsunami affected families were delivered water on a daily basis during that six months period. The water bowser has been handed over to SLRCS for tsunami use and capacity building.



»  Water and Sanitation for Internally Displaced Persons in Jaffna and Hambantota

ARC has provided and maintained sanitation facilities at three camps for over 3500 tsunami displaced people and provided potable water supply and emergency relief. This includes the construction of toilets, gully traps, hygiene tanks, showers, drains, wet land grey water filters as well as other items requested by IDPs. Emergency relief was also provided to the camps due to monsoonal flooding.



»  Water Chlorinators for Ambalantota and Tangalle Water Treatment Plants

Soon after the tsunami, ARC aimed at helping restore the capacity and functionality of the water and sanitation infrastructure with the Sri Lankan Water Board.

Chlorine gas regulators were installed in the Ambalantota and Tangalle water treatment plants to increase the capacity of these facilities to meet the growing demand for treated water resulting from the increase in piped water supply schemes constructed during the post tsunami recovery period.



»  Rainwater Harvesting for Nine Schools in Hambantota

Nine schools provided with a Rain Water Harvesting System to supply water for hygiene and drinking purposes in Hambantota (7) and Tangalle (2). This includes the installation of guttering, down pipes, first flush, pre-filters, distribution line and hand pumps and 2 SLRCS staff trained in maintenance and water quality testing
