»  "Good Citizen" initiative by group of Sri Lankan students

Goal: Support of marketing students to produce and sell printed T-shirts for their Charity project
Objectives:
This project, developed by a group of Sri Lankan students from the Imperial Institute of Higher Education, promotes the concept of being a "Good Citizen" through a slogan on a T-shirt, with the dual objectives of raising awareness and funds for charity.
Responsibility /
Involvement:
The students teamed up with the ASRC which donated money for their "Good Citizen" project.

As part of the project, the group consisting of six female and one male student set up a company - Sun Beam Enterprises - developed the project, produced and sold the products. Despite its fun nature, the focus has been on promoting a Sri Lankan image amongst youth between the ages of 14 - 25. The slogans were either written in Sinhala, Tamil or English and were divided into four different categories:
  • Good Citizen for peace - with a focus on current social issues, e.g. conflict, racism.
  • Good Citizen for earth - with a focus on saving our environment and animals.
  • Good Citizen for fun - with a focus on personal traits of a person in a humorous matter.
  • Good Citizen for nutrition - with a focus on nutritious Sri Lankan food.
The students ran presentations and awareness raising campaigns in schools, as well as through the media. The T-shirts were sold at schools, other educational institutions and at popular clothing stores.

The ASRC supported this project as the students' goal was to open the eyes of the young generation of this country. By wearing these T-shirts, the people would be able to let the world know that they care about their country. At the same time they worked with a not-for-profit organisation and have identified a conflict-affected village, where they will provide computers for the use of children who currently do not have such facilities.
