 Saudi Arabia Red Crescent in Sri Lanka

The Saudi Red Crescent Society came to Sri Lanka immediately after the Tsunami devastation on 26th of December 2004. They met the President of Sri Lanka and the Hon Prime Minister, and also all government officials. The Hon Prime Minister requested the Government of Saudi Arabia to assist in what ever manner they could do it for the affected areas of Sri Lanka and kindly requested to uplift the Damaged Hospitals in the health sector. His Excellency Ambassador and the President of Saudi Red Crescent Society immediately promised to provide 15 ambulances and some medical equipment to the affected hospitals. The Saudi Red Crescent Society opened its branch office in Colombo to coordinate the relief works in Sri Lanka and Maldives.
Saudi Red Crescent Society donated a Sum of U.S. $ 300,000.00 to SLRCS
The Saudi Red Crescent Society donated a Sum of US$ 300,000.00 to the Sri Lankan Red Cross Society for their development of Tsunami relief works.
Donate 15 ambulances to Government hospitals worth of US $420,000
15 Brand New Nissan Ambulances, worth of US $ 420,000 were handed over to the Hon Prime Minister to be distributed to the following hospitals:

1.Hambantota Base Hospital2.Galle Teaching Hospital
3.Weligama Base Hospital4.Kattankudy District Hospital
5.Eravur District Hospital6.Sammanthurai District Hospital
7.Kalmunai Ashraff Hospital8.Ninthavur Hospital
9.Akkaraipattu Hospital10.Muttur Hospital
11.Toppur Hospital12.Kinniya Hospital
13.Jaffna Hospital14.Kalutara Base Hospital
15.Colombo Hospital

In Addition to the above ambulances the Saudi Red Crescent Society donated four more Ambulance to followings:
  1. Al Hamiyya Arabic College in Ampara
  2. Association of Muslim Youth of Sailan (Shabab) in Colombo
  3. Makola Muslim Orphanage in Makola
  4. South Eastern University in Ampara
The above ambulances were bought over selves in Sri Lanka which the cost was US$ 152,000

Saudi-Lanka Red Cross & Crescent Complex
On a request from the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, the Saudi Red Crescent Society has agreed to build a District Youth Training plus Logistic Center for the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, estimated to cost around US$ 250,000. The district of Kalutara has been earmarked. Land has been requested from the Government authorities of this district. It should be named the Saudi-Lanka Red Cross & Crescent Complex.

Relief Distribution of Essential Items for Tsunami Affected People
Immediately after the Tsunami Devastation the Saudi Red Crescent Society dispatched more than 8 plane loads consisting of Food items, tents, medicines, purified drinking water and generators as relief items for Tsunami affected people.

In addition to that on the Saudi Red Crescent Society sent about 45 container loads contains of Tents, Purified Water, Macaroni (Food item), Dates, Cooking Oil, Milk, Rice, Wheelchairs which were distributed through the local authorities in all affected areas. The Cost of Project was about US$ 3,000,000
Supply of urgently needed medical support to Tsunami Affected areas
As part of their relief work in Sri Lanka the Special team of Doctors consisting of Human Psychologist arrived in Sri Lanka to treat and counsel the affected people in Sri Lanka.

On advice of the Specialist Doctors the Saudi Red Crescent Society provided some self employment equipments to the affected people so that they can return to their normal life. The following items were distributed in the affected Districts of Ampara Baticalao, Trincomalee, Kalutara, Galle, Hambantota and Colombo.

Swing Machines , Weaving Machines, Bicycles, Carpenter's Tools, Cooking utensils, Mason's Tools, Mat Weaving Machines, Plumber's Tools, Educational Materials, Hair Cutting Tools (Barber Tools), Painter's Tools, Fishing Nets, T Shirts, Agricultural Tools, Tinker's Tool, Mechanic's Tool, Tiller' Tool, Electrician's Tool.

About 5,500 families benefited out this project and the Project cost was US$ 251,500

Supply of urgently needed medical equipment to hospitals in Ampara and Baticalo Districts
As requested by the Government of Sri Lanka and on the recommendation of Doctors the Saudi Red Crescent Society Donated Medical Equipments to the Tsunami affected Hospitals in Ampara and Baticalo Districts. The cost of the project were US$ 733,933 and the following Hospitals were benefited:
  • Asharaff Memorial Hospitals, Dental Equipments for 4 Hospitals, Akkaraipattu Base Hospital, Pottuwil Hospital, Palamunai Hospital, Kalmunai Hospital, Maruthamunai Hospital, Addalachchenai Hospital, Sammanthurai Hospital, Central Camp Hospital, Sainthamaruthu Hospital, Kattankudi Hospital, Oddamawadi Hospital.
  • The Project Cost of Trincomalee District was U.S. $ 718,093.05 the following Hospitals were benefited:
  • Trincomalee General Hospital, Nilaweli Hospital, Pulmodai Hospital, Kuchchaweli Hospital, Kantale Hospital, Kinniya Hospital, Mutur Hospital, Toppur Hospital, Kachchakudithievu Dispensary.
Supply of urgently needed medical equipment to hospitals in Southern Province
The Project Cost of Southern Province including the Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota Districts were US$ 974,638 and the following Hospitals were benefited:
  • Beruwela Hospital, Galle Mahamodera Hospital, Ambalangoda Hospital, Matara General Hospital Hambantota General Hospital, Tangalle Hospital, Beliatta Hospital Tissamaharama Hospital Embilipitiya Hospital
Supply of urgently needed medical equipment to hospitals in Colombo District
The Project cost of Colombo District was US$ 73,487 and the following Hospitals were benefited
  • Lady Ridgway Children Hospital, Maharagama Cancer Hospital, Azath Sally Foundation, Makola Muslim Orpahnage Dispensary
The Other Hospitals which were benefited are: Gampola General Hospital, Mawanella Base Hospital, Gampola Dental Clinic, Al Madeen Fisrt Aid Foundation Kurunegala. The total Project cost was US$ 66,533
Educational Facilities
In addition to the all services the Saudi Red Crescent Society distributed 100 Nos. Computers to more than 60 affected schools in all over the island. The project cost was US$ 85,000

Health center in Ampara District
The Saudi Red Crescent Society built and equipped a medical center in Al Hamiya Arabic College in the Ampara District for the benefit of the Tsunami Affected People. The Memorandum of Understanding was singed between the Al Hamiya Arabic College and Deputy Provincial Director of Health Services for Kalmunai and Saudi Red Crescent Society. The Medical Center was handed over to the DPDHS Kalmunai. The above project cost was US$ 63,860
Food Basket for Holy Month of Ramadhan
The Saudi Red Crescent Society Distributed 10,000 food Basket for the Tsunami affected people in the Ampara, Baticaloa, Trinclomalee, Galle, Weligama, Hambantota, Kirinda and some in Colombo. This Project cost was US$ 138,250
Medical Camps in Colombo
The Saudi Red Crescent Society participated in some medical camps in collaboration with the Azath Sally Foundation and Association of Muslim Youths of Sailan (Shabab) in the Colombo District for the benefit of poor people in those areas which organized for the benefit of affected people in the affected areas and poor people in the Colombo District. The Project was US$ 35,275
Road Works
The Saudi Red Crescent has participated in developing some of the Roads which were in the lower areas and were flooded by the recent rain. This project was done to ease the immense problems faced by the poor people who are residing in the shanties in the suburb of Colombo City. The Project cost was US$ 10,000
Educational Materials for the New Year for the School Children
The Saudi Red Crescent Society has also distributed about 3,000 School bags containing stationeries for the School children in the affected areas. The Project Cost was US$ 10,772

The Saudi Red Crescent Society has spent over 7 Million US$ in addition to the huge donations made to the other International and Sri Lankan Non Governmental Organizations.
