Sri Lanka Red Cross Society Concludes Cyclone Fengal Flood Relief Operation
Over 37,000 individuals supported across nine districts from December 2024 to April 2025
The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS), with the support of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) through the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF), has successfully concluded its emergency flood relief operation in response to Cyclone Fengal, which caused significant damage across several parts of the country in late 2024.
Cyclone Fengal, which affected approximately 441,373 individuals, led to widespread flooding and hardship across nine districts: Ampara, Batticaloa, Jaffna, Mannar, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, and Vavuniya. In response, SLRCS mobilized its network of volunteers and branch teams to implement a comprehensive relief effort spanning from December 2024 to April 2025.
During this period, SLRCS reached over 37,000 people through a range of humanitarian interventions. The operation included the distribution of cash grants to 2,500 families, totaling more than LKR 50 million, enabling affected households to meet their immediate recovery needs with dignity and flexibility.
In addition, 4,925 non-food relief item (NFRI) kits were provided to support requirements, and 1,450 school kits were distributed to ensure that children could resume their education without further disruption. The SLRCS also conducted nine first aid sessions to provide basic healthcare support to affected communities during periods of isolation.
A total of 8,875 individuals received direct financial or relief assistance, including 4,090 men and 3,903 women, with special attention given to the most vulnerable populations.
The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society expresses its sincere gratitude to all volunteers, local authorities, and international partners who contributed to the success of this operation.
