While strengthening bilateral relations, Red Cross Society of China donates to the Koslanda landslide relief operation

05/11/2014 – Colombo, Sri Lanka: The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) donated 30,000 USD to the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society supporting the ongoing Koslanda landslide operations and to aid the survivors of the tragedy.

The donation was made through the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka. Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka His Excellency Mr. Wu Jianghao handed over the funds to the Director General of Sri Lanka Red Cross Tissa Abeywickrama at a function held at the Embassy today.

The funds are geared to help and assist the current landslide operation of SLRCS and also to support the longer term needs of the people who survived the tragedy.

Meanwhile the Chinese Government also donated twenty million rupees to the Sri Lankan Government for the utilization for the same operation. Secretary to the Ministry of Disaster Management Mrs. Marina Mohomed was present at the occasion to receive the donation.

Addressing the gathering which included a Chinese business group in Sri Lanka, the Ambassador said ” China has been a long standing friend of Sri Lanka and we stand in solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka in their hour of need”

Also speaking at the event, the Director General of SLRCS thanked the Chinese Ambassador and the Red Cross Society of China for the contribution and continuous support even since the tsunami, ten years back.

Strengthening bilateral relations 

Meanwhile the President of SLRCS Jagath Abeysinghe & the Director General of SLRCS Tissa Abeywickrama met with the Vice President of the RCSC Mr. Wang Rupeng in Beijing at the sidelines of the IFRC Asia Pacific Conference recently.

Extensive discussions took place between the two parties in seeking how both countries can seek better service to the most vulnerable during the time of disasters.

The SLRCS delegation thanked the RCSC for their continuous support to Sri Lanka and the commitments made for projects.

Dr. Baige Zhao (Executive Vice President, Red Cross Society of China / Vice President, International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies), Ms.YU Liying (Deputy Director, External Liaison Department, Red Cross Society of China), Mr.Ma Wenbo (Head, International Organizations Div/External Liaison Dept, Red Cross Society of China) were among the delegation from China Red Cross.
