A Pathway to Dreams

For fourteen-year-old Deshan Vimukthi, growing up in Nawagamuwa has meant learning to live with uncertainty. Whenever heavy rains hit the area, the nearby canal overflows, rapidly inundating the roads and leaving his family stranded inside their home.
Yet for Deshan, flooding is only one part of the challenge. The deeper struggle lies within the walls of his home, where his family faces a severe financial hardship.
Deshan lives with his parents, his grandmother, and his younger sister. His father, the breadwinner of the family, met with an accident that aggravated an underlying medical condition.
“I am a seizure patient, and following the recent accident, I simply cannot do any work,” his father Saman Kumara (49) explains, his voice heavy with emotion. “Currently, our family has no stable source of income. We hardly find the meals to get through the day.”
With no regular income, the family has had to rely heavily on the kindness of neighbours just to survive. For a long time, Deshan’s education hung by a thread, kept alive only through learning materials pooled together by compassionate neighbours and supportive schoolteachers.
Despite the overwhelming weight on his young shoulders, Deshan refuses to let his circumstances define his future. When he received a pack of essential educational supplies, a gentle smile broke across his otherwise worried face.
Holding the new kit, Deshan’s eyes lit up.
“I want to be an engineer,” Deshan says confidently. “I want to earn for my family when I grow up and lift them out of this hardship. Out of all these supplies, the geometrics box is my favourite.”
For his father, the relief is visible. The relief efforts have provided more than just stationery; they have restored a sense of dignity and hope to a family navigating their darkest days.
“Thank you for the support provided,” his father expresses with gratitude. “In our current situation, this assistance means so much to our family.”
By assisting determined students like Deshan, these interventions are doing more than supporting education – they are empowering the next generation and strengthening their ability to pursue their dreams.
