Volunteer Spotlight – Pushpakanthan’s Heroic Journey : From Dream to Dedication
Behind every act of kindness lies a story of courage, commitment, and quiet sacrifice. Mr. Pushpakanthan, a long-standing volunteer of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society – Matale Branch, embodies these values in every step of his humanitarian journey. For over two decades, he has served not for recognition, but out of a deep, unwavering desire to help others. His story is not just one of service, it is a testament to the true spirit of volunteerism.
“I first heard about the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society during the conflict period, through a radio broadcast highlighting its humanitarian work. That moment sparked a lifelong dream in me, to become a social worker and serve the people of my country,” he recalled.
His early days as a volunteer were challenging, often working without resources or support. Yet, his commitment never wavered.
“We came to work using our own money. I never wanted the spotlight, I just wanted to serve the people and the country,” he said.
For nearly four years, he served as a First Aid Camp Instructor in Sigiriya. Among the many experiences he encountered, one remains vivid in his memory:
“A group arrived with a four-year-old child. I warned them not to climb because the giant honeybees had been agitated at that moment. Sadly, they ignored the warning and were attacked. In the chaos, the mother ran, leaving the child behind. I ran to the child, shielded him from the bees, and ensured he was unharmed. I handed him over safely to a police officer who rushed him to the hospital. That moment, like so many others was deeply emotional for me. My team and I have saved countless lives over the years. These are moments that stay in my heart forever.”
Mr. Pushpakanthan exemplifies the selflessness, courage, and compassion that define Red Cross volunteers. His tireless service, often at personal cost, has left a lasting impact on the communities he served.
“I am deeply grateful to the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society for the sense of family it has given me, the brotherhood and sisterhood among volunteers. I encourage others to join this journey of service. I received the Desha Keerthi Award, and today I stand where I once dreamed of as a child. I am proud of what I’ve become.”
In recognition of his remarkable contributions, Mr. Pushpakanthan was honoured as the Best Volunteer during World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day. His dedication continues to inspire countless others across Sri Lanka.
We are proud to have individuals like Mr. Pushpakanthan among our volunteers, true humanitarians who embody the spirit of the Red Cross.
