Sri Lanka Red Cross Society Leads Island-wide Recovery Clean-Up After Devastating Cyclone Ditwah

Posted on Monday, January 5th, 2026

In the wake of one of the most severe natural disasters in recent history, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) has launched an islandwide Cyclone Ditwah Flood and Landslide Recovery Clean-Up Drive, mobilizing volunteers, partners, and communities to restore affected environments and public spaces across all 25 districts of the country.

The clean-up initiative, which commenced on 4 January 2026, focuses on removing debris including fallen trees, flood-related waste, and landslide remnants from rivers, beaches, towns, forested areas, and other public locations, with the aim of reducing environmental hazards and supporting early recovery efforts. This programme reflects the SLRCS’s strong commitment to humanitarian action and environmental rehabilitation at a national level.

The recovery activities are being implemented with the support of SLRCS volunteers, donors, partners, and government agencies, highlighting strong collaboration between civil society and humanitarian networks.

This islandwide clean-up campaign is being carried out across Sri Lanka through the active involvement of all 25 SLRCS branches, starting from 4 January 2026. As part of this national initiative, branches will continue to identify priority locations within each district and carry out targeted clean-up activities to restore public spaces and promote environmental protection.
