Sri Lanka Red Cross Society Leads Post-Flood Loss and Damage Assessment with United Nations Development Programme and Disaster Management Centre
In response to the devastating floods caused by heavy rains due to the ‘Fengal’ cyclone in November 2024, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is supporting the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) in conducting a comprehensive loss and damage assessment.

Aligned with the Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) framework, this evaluation examines the disaster’s impacts across productive, social, and infrastructure sectors in 12 severely affected districts in the northern, eastern, north-central, and north-western provinces.

SLRCS, as a grassroots organization, is leveraging its wide volunteer network and technical expertise to support systematic data collection and compilation at the district level. This critical work ensures the assessment captures the full scope of damages and losses, laying the groundwork for resilient recovery strategies.

The findings will guide efforts to prioritize green recovery, sustainable development, and the principles of “build back better” ensuring long-term community resilience. Together with UNDP and DMC, SLRCS remains committed to supporting affected communities and creating a road map for a more sustainable and secure future.
