Sri Lanka Red Cross Society Strengthens Community-Based Dengue Prevention Efforts.
With dengue cases continuing to rise across Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS), under the IFRC sEAP Project, is strengthening community-based dengue prevention, surveillance, and preparedness initiatives in high-risk areas.
As part of these ongoing efforts, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society – Gampaha Branch conducted a dengue prevention awareness programme and school clean-up campaign at Newstead Girls College, Negombo, bringing together Red Cross volunteers, Junior Red Cross members, and youth volunteers.
The initiative focused on reducing dengue risks within the school environment by identifying and removing potential mosquito breeding sites, while promoting community participation in dengue prevention. Volunteers worked alongside students and school staff to clean the premises and encourage sustainable practices to maintain a safe and healthy environment.
A dengue awareness session conducted by the Public Health Inspector (PHI) further strengthened the knowledge of students and staff on dengue prevention measures, early identification of risks, and the importance of maintaining clean surroundings.
Through these community-led actions, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society continues to support efforts to build resilient communities and enhance public awareness on dengue prevention, contributing to safer and healthier communities across the country.
