Distributing water to the drought affected in SE Sri Lanka

09/08/2012, Monaragala, Sri Lanka: The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society’s Moneragala branch upon a request from the District Secretary of the Moneragala District took steps to distribute drinking water for the people in the area who were severely affected by the drought that is prevailing in certain parts of Sri Lanka.

Moneragala is the second largest district in the island surrounded by Ampara district from the North and East, Hambantota district from the South, Badulla district from West and North,and Ratnapura district from the South East.

The total population of the district amounts to 420,000 persons and majority of them live in villages.  The village population amounts to 98%.  Estate population amounts to 2% and there is no signification % of urban population as such.

With the needs of the district assessed a water distribution programme at the field level was organised, initiated and implemented by the branch staff with the support of Divisional secretariat of Sewanagala.

One Tractor with water bowser with the capacity of 4000 litres was used for the water distribution programme.

The programme managed to reach over 240 families within the district.
