Gampaha
Gampaha (meaning 5 villages) is the second most populated district in the country with a population of just over 2 million in a land area of 1,387 sq km.The district consists of 13 divisions (Divulapitiya, Kattana, Minuwangoda, Meerigama, Attanagalla, Gampaha, Ja-ela, Dompe, Kelaniya, Mahara, Biyagama and Wattala).
The district has an important status in having three free trade industrial zones and the International Airport.
The district has many places of interests including the world renowned beaches, a National Botanical Garden, Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic and Christian places of worship as well as many historical and archeological places of interest. The lagoon on the west coast provides an area for local fishermen for their livelihood.
The district adjoins Colombo and due to its canal systems and sluice gates in disrepair is prone to heavy flooding during annual monsoon rains.
