A Safer and More Supportive Space for Expecting Mothers in Katunayake EPZ

In a bustling industrial zone where assembly lines rarely pause and production targets never wait, the quiet strength of women often goes unrecognized. In the Katunayake Export Processing Zone (EPZ), where thousands of women form the backbone of Sri Lanka’s industrial workforce, the challenge of balancing work with maternal health needs had not been adequately met. Among them is Shamika, a 30-year-old expectant mother employed at one of the zone’s factories. She navigates long working hours each day while striving to nurture both her own well-being and the tiny life growing within her.

The recent refurbishment of the Katunayake MOH Clinic has transformed the space into a modern, comfortable, and dignified environment for maternal and reproductive healthcare. With enhanced infrastructure and barrier-free access, the clinic now stands as a model of equitable service delivery tailored to the needs the workforce.

“This is my first child,” she shares with a smile, sitting in the waiting area of the newly refurbished MOH clinic. “Earlier, we had to climb stairs to reach the clinic. It was tough, especially for pregnant women and anyone with health conditions. But now, the place is spacious, clean, and air-conditioned. We feel safe and comfortable coming here.”

For working women like Shamika, time is limited. Attending health check-ups during working hours can be challenging. “I’m lucky that my workplace allows me time off for clinic visits,” she says. “Otherwise, I don’t think I would be able to get the care I need.”

At the official opening, Dr. Indrani Malwenna, Regional Director of Health Services, spoke about the significance of the initiative. “We focus on expecting mothers because pregnancy brings about both mental and physical challenges that require special care. At the same time, we must support men as well. Only a physically and mentally healthy workforce can contribute to the nation’s development.”

She added, “This group may sometimes be viewed as underprivileged, but we see them as vital contributors to the country’s economy. I’m grateful to all who supported this effort. Thanks to this partnership, we are now able to offer improved services to a very special group in my district.”

This initiative marks a major step forward in ensuring that women, girls, and youth working in the EPZ have access to quality, inclusive, and accessible healthcare services, laying the foundation for a healthier future generation and a stronger workforce.
