An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) training programme was successfully conducted at the Ritigala Wildlife Conservation & Research Centre, bringing together 40 government officials for an intensive three-day learning experience on environmental protection and sustainable development.

The programme was organized under the Managing Together Project, implemented by the Ministry of Environment with funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The project is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS), with technical guidance from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Through a blend of theoretical sessions and field-based learning, participants enhanced their understanding and practical skills in:
✅ Biodiversity conservation and ecological sensitivity
✅ Identification of birds, mammals, and endemic plants
✅ Management of Invasive Alien Species (IAS)
✅ Ecosystem exploration through guided field visits

The training provided an invaluable opportunity for participants to experience Ritigala mountain’s unique biodiversity and rare plant species firsthand. It also strengthened their capacity to integrate ecological considerations into national and regional development planning, contributing to the country’s broader environmental sustainability goals.
